Community Day.

All of the costs of the first "Tudor Day" were met by the new museum. In ensuing years the overwhelming financial support for the "free" event was drawn back and a planning committee formed to organise and finance future events.Childrens parade The primary representatives of this group came from the schools, the others came from a range of community groups, the museum and police. With a grounding of financial assistance from the District and Town Council budgets the shortfall was made up with a range of fund-raising ideas, sponsored swims, quiz nights and raffles, and donations.

The "Tudor" theme eventually ran its course and was replaced by "Community Day", an event continuing the historical theme. In later years the original bounds of the day undertook a few changes, each of them designed to place the needs of the schools paramount. First the day forsook a regular Tuesday market slot as it had been found that in attending the dusk fireworks display the younger children were too tired the following morning. The new day, a Friday, had to forsake the attraction of the market. In search of warmer weather and prompted by school tests, a new date in late June was tried with success - although dusk was then, even later.
